Mortgage lending soars
New mortgages increased by 23.8% in January compared to the same period last year, reaching 28,127 transactions, marking the tenth consecutive period of growth.
16 autonomous communities saw an increase in home mortgages, while Navarre recorded a 10.1% decrease.
Andalusia and Madrid led the way in terms of the number of mortgages issued, with more than 5,000 new contracts signed in each region in January, followed by Catalonia (4,825) and the Valencian Community (3,364).
Notary data also showed an increase in the average mortgage amount, up 10.9% year-on-year to €163,338. The increases were particularly notable in Madrid (18.4%) and La Rioja (16.7%), while there were decreases in Asturias (-14.5%) and Navarre (-4.3%). Finally, 50.8% of real estate transactions were financed by mortgages, with the average loan amounting to 72.1% of the cost of the property being purchased.
